Hey folks, I just got a call from a gunmaker here in my state, a particular frenchman, trained in Belgium. He has been putting an old AJ Aubrey back on face for me. Although his comments started with saying he didn't care much for American guns, he finished with high praise of the Aubrey. Commenting that it was well built and that although there were a few shortcuts, he would have one a hundred times over before having an LC Smith...

That is all, I must now pour a scotch and watch the discussion. Below is a photo of my Model 34 as a visual guide wink

It's a nice looking gun, but if it were an LC Smith, it wouldn't have been off face to begin with.

Shane,

Since neither is a Lefever, I must resort to judging you on the type of scotch you are drinking, so???

PS, beautiful gun in the pic. Cheers.

An 18 year Glenmorangie.

And maybe you'll prefer this one. It currently rests near the Aubrey. It's quite nice as well. I shoot it pretty often these days. But it gets put away in favor of a Fox Sterlingworth 16ga when the birds have wings and not throwers.

Not to throw gas on your open flame but I have not seen many if any AJ Aubreys with crack in the wood like I see on Smiths. Perhaps those which cracked are long gone or maybe they are just rare to start with.

I have one with 32" heavy barrels (I am sure shot with abusive loads in an abusive manner) and it was shot enough to be shot loose... there are no cracks.

L C Smiths can, & do, get loose the same as any other break open gun. Usual cause is a lot of open/close cycles without lubricant on the hinge. The rotary bolts on most "Elsies" are not fitted up the way Alexander Brown designed them to not only hold the barrels down against the frame, but also to hold the breech up against the barrels.
I have only tried this on one Lefever but I acquired a :Parts" H grade some years back in very poor overall condition showing much abuse. The trigger plate screw had been replaced with one too long which prevented the cocking hook from seating thus the barrels would not close enough to latch up. Someone at some point had tried to "Correct" this by backing off the ball hinge screw till they got it loose enough it would bolt. Although still not a shooter I did shorten the plate screw & set the hinge back up properly & in the process noted that with the hinge screw completely out of the gun the Doll's Head drew breech to barrel so that it was tight & the top lever stopping at about the same point as with the hinge installed. In spite of all its other faults the Doll's Head was properly fitted & still working properly on this one.
