Will the socalled rifled foster slugs spin the slug? Are rifled slugs more accurate than non rifled slugs? Any testing ever done on these slugs? Thanks

Ithaca16,
The "Ribs" on the slugs are there mainly to allow a closer fit to the barrel, while allowing use in barrels of any choke. The ribs will deform and not raise pressures significantly. The ribs may accidently impart some spin, but it flies "point on" because it is nose heavy.A non rifled slug will also fly "point on", for the same reason.

I am wondering if Winchester or Remington do any testing to see if the slug did spin any?

How much spin would very shallow grooves impart to a very dense, heavy object? Not much I am afraid. They look cool but you need rifling to get slugs to spin.

I think the grooves were put there to "Insinuate" they imparted spin. Lyman at one point some years back sold a Foster type mold & a separate Die for putting in the grooves. I recall reading reading a test report by the NRA staff probably some 40 years ago in which they fired some of the slugs cast in the Lyman molds both un-rifled & rifled. Accuracy was virtually identical either way. This was still in the days when Card & Fillers wads were King & it was noted in handloading these slugs it was essential that either a .200" Card or two of the normal .135" cards be placed atop the filler wad next to the slug to prevent wadding being pushed into the hollow base & destroying accuracy.
Th e solid nose portion of these slugs were made small enough to go through any choke normally encountered with only the skirt expanding to fit the bore. This skirt would squeeze back down when going through the choke. The old Ithaca "Deerslayer" guns had a cylinder bored bbl having about the same diameter of a normal full choke for its entire length. These barrels were noted to have some of the best possible accuracy of any un-rifled barrel with the Foster slugs as they did not expand the skirt so much.

Thanks 2-piper Winchester slugs in my 16ga are about .040 undersize for a .662 16ga bore. Remington 20ga. foster slugs are about .008 undersize in my 20ga with .615 bore. This must be why my 20ga and my friend's 20ga. gun's have more more accuracy.

They fly to target just like rock in a sock. The name of the game today is slugs enclosed in disposable plastics cuts or petals which afford very tight fit through fully rifled barrels or at least extended rifled choke tube. These projectiles actually spin on the way to target and shot to 200 yards are possible with guns like TarHunt bolt shotgun.
If you're blessed enough to have smoothbore with choke tubes buy extended rifled tube and try Lightfield 'Lites' you might be pleasantly shocked. I was.
