Under the stock should be more markings/numbers whose could better indicate the year when the rifle has been proofed.
I do not know any who sold ready-made ammo to this caliber so I´n quite sure you have to load your own. 8x57 IS is easy parent case to do ones to yours rifle.

OMR,

If you pull the barrel of the gun, you will likely find a date code on the underside. FWIW, my 1903 model M/S, serial #14037, was made in 1919.

There are several sources of ammunition for the gun - google is your friend here. Modern stuff can be bought via outlets like Buffalo Arms (www.buffaloarms.com. A search on gunbroker.com, gunsinternational.com, or gunsamerica.com will also turn up some options for you.

Good luck,

Ken

I will have to dig my 1908 out to find date but I have purchased ammo for it from Safari Arms in NY,not sure he is still in business but this shows license is current, you might want to give him a call.

If not try one of these;

Thanks to all for the useful and quick responses. That's why we all like this site. I found a guy with 9 boxes of Western ammo for sale at $75 per box. He said they go for $100-125 per box at shows! Looks like reloading is in my future. Classics aren't cheap but they really enhance the experience.

Montenegrin, I note you are from Slovenia. Isn't that where PrviP ammo company is located? What do you think of their products? They don't seem to carry the 8x56ms at least on their website.

Those ammos are rimmed 8x56R Steyr, (familiar with Steyr m95) not 8x56 MS.

oldmanriver,
Handloading this cartridge should prove to be fairly easy.Also, handloading in general is a very rewarding part of our hobby.Even when factory ammo is avaliable, I usually choose to shoot handloads. Just enjoy the whole experience.

oldmanriver,
Prvi Partizan factory is not located in Slovenia but rather in Serbia. I think they make good ammo, I use it when I can find it locally. But they do not make 8x56 MS; however they do make 6.5x54 MS.
With kind regards,
Jani
