A good answer to the same question, from the Savage collectors forum...never say never.

"In general, post war. Some models (post war R's and F's) were all drilled and tapped. Post-war EG's in Savage calibers, for the most part, were not (with the exception of very late 1950's models starting in the 725XXX serial number range) and all EG's in the Winchester calibers were tapped."

I felt the same way re: Savage lever guns for many years. My father collected them, and when I inherited his collection they were among the first to go. I have since come to appreciate highly the design and workmanship (at least in the early ones) and have a few in my own collection now. That's not to say that I have abandoned Springfield, Mauser, and Krag sporters for they hold a spot near and dear to my heart. A nice early Savage 1899/99 is a thing of beauty, rugged, accurate, and (as long as a scope is left off of it) a well balanced companion for a day in the woods.

Although I too would rather have the Mauser turned down earlier, I wouldn't kick the Savage out of bed for eating crackers.

Michael, Fugger? If that's the one I'm thinking of, I saw it at a show several years back…Louisville, maybe?

This is a Fugger G&H gun from an auction a while back.

14. Griffin + Howe Savage Model 99 Takedown Rifle Engraved by Joseph Fugger

Serial # 298782, cal. .300 Savage. 2411 medium weight round barrel, bright, excellent bore. A magnificent example of Fugger's engraving with finely detailed floral scrollwork and game scenes. The right side of the frame with a highly detailed woodland scene with three deer, the left side with two bull moose in the woods. The engraving is signed by Joseph Fugger, something Griffin + Howe reports he rarely did. The walnut stocks are nicely figured with dark striping. The buttstock has a shadowline cheekpiece for a right handed shooter, an engraved steel cap on the pistol grip, an unengraved oval nameplate on the belly, and a checkered and engraved steel buttplate with a trap. The forend has a dark horn tip and both stocks feature wrap-around point pattern checkering with the side panels on the buttstock also checkered. The rifle has a hooded ramp front sight with a barrel sleeve, a folding rear barrel sight leaf and a Lyman folding tang sight which is stored in a specially carved recess under the buttplate trapdoor. As an added touch the base of the tang sight is also engraved. A Lyman Alaskan "All-Weather" 2 1/2X scope with a crosshair reticle is mounted on top of the frame in a Griffin + Howe single lever detachable mount. Other small touches which add to the beauty of this rifle are a jeweled bolt and a color case hardened lever. This rifle predates Griffin + Howe's later practice of numbering their guns on top of the barrel and the barrel address simply reads " Built By Griffin + Howe New York, N.Y.". The rifle has 100% metal and wood finish with only a few tiny blemishes on the wood, the scope is in excellent condition. This rifle is housed in a full length leather trunk style case with a Griffin + Howe label. The exterior of the case shows several scuff marks, the interior is in perfect condition.

I've always wanted to see how they attached the mount or base on that one. Super cool rifle. Wish the pics were more clear to compare the engraving.

Never found time to go back w/in 5 days to pick up the rifle and that is ok as there will be plenty of other weapons to buy. Thank you for wonderful pics and info. Happy new year to all.

Copy says the scope is "on top of the frame". I imagine the base mounts in the the two holes in the rear tang that the tang sights used so everything sits directly atop the receiver. They may have even drilled a few more holes for strength.
