The old-time authors sometimes claim that rebounding locks have lesser striking power, and might be more prone to misfire. That doesn't seem to be a problem now, however.

My greatest concern about non-rebounding hammers - which may be because I never shot one - is that when reloading, you must manually half-cock them before you open the gun. This adds another movement to slower the reloading, which isn't too objectionable as it is. But I often wonder if, shooting a non-rebounder, you forget to half-cock the hammers before loading, and snap the gun close with live ammo in chambers and strikers protruding all the way into the primers. What will happen?

The ones I have used will not open until you have cocked the hammers after firing. On mine the firing pin will not allow the gun to open. I have not used that many of them but most are a short cock to fire the gun which is similar to taking off a safety when talking about the time element.

I suggest an LC Smith hammer gun. They can be found at reasonable prices, take modern ammo (within reason) and work well. They are not fancy unless you can find a higher grade. A true classic.

The geometry of my non-rebounding Lang is such that it will open and close with the hammers down. The issue is that if you leave the hammers down and slam it shut it could fire.

The procedure is simple - fire, half-cock, open, extract, reload, close, cock, fire. After you use a non-rebounding hammer gun for a short while the procedure becomes automatic.

I prefer non-rebounding hammers but I also own a 24 gauge with rebounding hammers. I like all guns.

Check out the DeHaan shotgun website. You can order a Turkish-made 12 gauge hammergun with barrels up to 32".
