A.O. Zischang and maybe his son who did gun work but I have never seen anything that was attributed to him.My late buddy had a beautiful Zischang Ballard that his son now has.

I've held a lot of single-shot rifles over the years and although we all have different taste this is my favorite.

Belongs to a friend, made by Zischang, caliber 25-35. I'll see if I have a good overall picture.

The way that grip meets the stock is very distinctive.

If you have handled it, how does it feel on your shoulder?

I think I read somewhere that Zischang worked for Lefever and maybe Parker Brothers.Anyone else read that? I think I also read that he did very high end cabinet work which would not be surprising.

Here is my High Wall in 22/303. 24" octagon barrel.
John Pell (KOGOT) of Trinidad Colorado did the metal work, must be around twenty five years ago now and it was stocked by a young guy at that time who had just left the gun smithing school there. Mark Pharr who moved down to Austin, Texas.
The wood was supplied by a guy who I can't recall his name and who was an instructor there at the school as well. He had a stock on the wall of his workshop at home, showing the right hash he made the first time he used a stock duplicator.
The reamer and re-loading dies were made up by an old guy in Raton who again I cannot remember his name.
I think I can remember another instructor at the school when I was shown around and met John Bull, mainly because he was English and was in the Army in Malaya the same time I was in 1956. I think that was his name. Nice guy.
Johns wife Margaret said his trade name of Kogot was because she called him the kindly old gunsmith of Trinidad because he never charged enough for his work.

RHD45,I've also read that A O Zischang worked for Lefever after Sharps closed.

On page 28 of Robert Elliott's "Uncle Dan Lefever, Master Gunmaker" the photo caption says "A. O. Zischang was barrel shop superintendent for Nichols & Lefever when this 10 gauge double was built for him." The photos shows what seems to be a Grade E N & L hammer gun, but the locks are marked "A. O.Zischang" rather than Nichols & Lefever.

N & L was the last of four partnerships for Mr Lefever prior to creation of D. M.Lefever Co, the maker of the side cocker hammerless guns, and the predecessor to Lefever Arms Co. Incidentally, the first of those side cocker guns, #5000, was displayed at the Las Vegas show recently ended.

The .25-35 rifle above has been with me for the past 25 years or so, and it comes to shoulder just fine!

Did I read somewhere that A. O. Zischang also played and made violins? A man of many talents.

Yeah, and he used some concoction to get the "red" into the violin finish. Somewhere I have seen his formula in an article. Reading and studying this kind of stuff for over 50 years and even with good memory I am having trouble remembering where I read something that didn't seem too important at the time.
