For your viewing pleasure. These guns are coming up in Julia's upcoming March sale. They're a set. Pretty extraordinary. You can see a few more pics on my blog:

More Pics of 28g Boss O/U & SxS

Thanks

Those colors are 100% original, absolutely guaranteed with total certainty.

I think you're picking up on the fact that the guns are in the low 9000 serial number range. Colors from that period can appear richer and bolder than the colors on earlier guns - say from the 4-7000 range.

Of course, earlier guns have had more time to age, mellow, and be used. These 28gs have barely been handled, and they've always been stored away in their case.

Here's a pics of 100% absolutely original 12g Boss O/U from the 8000 range:

Can I ask a stupid question? If a vent hole is considered necessary in a SxS (as I assume the pin in the fence of the Boss above to be), how is gas vented on the O/U gun, particularly at the top breech?

Sorry to go off thread a bit but the photos got me thinking. They are splendid Boss's though.

The pin on the Ball of this side by side is not a vent pin.It just locks the disc in position. The pin on the O/U limits the movement of the striker and prevents it from coming out of the back of the action and also spinning.Hopefully if the gun is made properly there is no need for the vent pins. The striker protrusion on Boss guns is very small.Around 50 to 55 thousands of an inch.

Pugwash-

Thank you for the explanation.

I was scratching my head about that question, and it's nice to get the answer from someone who actually builds these guns.

I hope all's well.

Beautiful guns but on the SxS a 5 or 6 pin lock?

Thank you Pugwash, appreciate your explanation.

What about the Purdey, where the SxS pin does also vent gasses. If they consider it necessary on the SxS, do they vent on the Woodward/Purdey O/U?

Thanks,

On the Purdey side by side the pins do have a small hole right through them and are known as vent pins. This is standard practice on Purdey's and really is traditional so they've kept it.On the O/Us there are short flat retainers let into the back of the actions. As with the pins on the Boss O/U these limit movement and stop the strikers from spinning.Unless the cap is pierced there is no gas to vent. The way the strikers are shaped and the amount of protrusion it is highly unlikely that a cap will ever be pierced.
