Hi, reason for all the 800X posts is I was given 4lbs of it for free. There is a powder shortage around here, and only a very limited brands are available for the foreseeable future.
So...have to make the best of it.
Thanks again!!!

I was very please to be able to sell 8 pounds of the stuff I had. Way to many odd sounding shells. It only brought $5/pound but it was a happy moment when it went out of my shop! bill

I use it in my 41 Mag and reduced loads in my 222 Rem, 5.6x50R, 25-204 and in 12ga. 2 3/4" 1 1/4 oz. copper plated BB varmint loads. I weigh everything so don't worry to much about metering but have used it in a powder measure for the 41 Mag with good results. It is a pretty decent powder for what I do with it and I can usually find it. For info on reduced rifle loads see Informative articles "To Bee Or 223 is that the question" on this sight. http://www.jamescalhoon.com/

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

For light .38 Special practice reloads, I use 4.0 gr. of 800X with any cast lead bullet in the weight range of 120 gr. to 160 gr. Velocity is around 700 f.p.s. Ideal for airweight snubbies, really reduces the recoil.

I think your new recipe should be fine, The hotter Federal primer and slightly larger Federal wad in the Gold medal case plus a 1 1/8 oz. load should give you a decent burn. Still a dirty powder but but can't beat the price... That's what cleaning rods are for...
Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought stupid, than open it and confirm.

Love it for mag loads in modern guns in 20 and 12. Tried it in a lower pressure 1 1/8 oz, 1200 fps load for early prairie grouse hunting w/an LC and it performed excellent also.
No sure how that low pressure load would work late season.
You have to keep an eye on it w/the scale to make sure it's behaving.
It's an awkward shaped powder grain which reduces powder migration if that's an issue you have w/a certain hunting load.
Great hunting powder. Not a great high quantity target powder.

800X was originally billed as a 12 ga. target powder, which it ain't. It is better suited to large gauge (12 & over) porch and heavy hunting loads, but you shouldn't have to cast far to find better powders (cleaner & more uniform) for whatever you want to do.
Because it is a large flake powder, the metering is especially poor through the small diameter powder bushing needed for the smaller gauges. Again, it's not hard to find better powders.

I've used it in 28ga target loads with good results. In that application it burns fairly clean. I have the original insert that Dupont published for 800X when it was introduced. There are some loads in there making between 4-5000 LUP's. Now that is some low pressure. I always thought I might try some sometime in the right gun but haven't yet done so. As for dirty, what is dirtier, 800X or black powder. 2 swipes with a bore brush would clean out 800X residue.

I don't worry about the "Dirty" much, as you say it will wipe clean. What I do worry about is Black Powder will burn at -50° in a 4,000 psi load, in fact it will ignite easily & burn about as quick in open air as it will under pressure. 800X or any other smokeless "WILL NOT". The Slower the powder the more it is designed by either shape, deterrent or both to slow it down. These also make it harder to ignite. Some double base powders burn dirty because of their Nitro-Glycerine content. If a Single base powder burns dirty it is usually because of incomplete combustion. If this be the case the biggest concern "IS NOT THE DIRT"
