My wife made me very happy today - she said it is time to buy a bigger gun cabinet. But wait, it gets better -- she suggested something that holds about 25 long guns. Currently I am using an 8 gun sheet metal cabinet from Dick's, but the collection has overflowed it.

I am looking for a cabinet that looks like furniture, most likely an armoire, because it will be in our bedroom. Although I like the idea of a 25 gun cabinet (and my wife's attitude), probably a 16 gun cabinet would suffice since I am only up to 9 long guns or so now. I am not looking for a safe, but something that can be locked securely enough to keep children out. Further, because my wife's friends are "from the blue part of the state," as she puts it, she does not want anything with glass doors.

Can anyone recommend or direct me to someone who makes or sells such a piece of furniture? I am hoping to keep the price reasonable, but would hope for something decent.

Thanks.

And I thought my friend whose wife not only reloads his shells but cleans his birds was lucky! :-)

I know it's not an answer to your question... but...if you're not going to display them, you might as well secure them. They have a way of multiplying, and it's nice to be able to leave the house and know your investment is secure. Safe really is the only way to go.

The most peace of mind I get from my safe is being able to return to my house knowing that one of MY guns isn't going to be aimed at me when I walk in...

You cannot buy a safe too big! There are companies that build wood clad safes, but some are finished nice enough to be used as furniture.

A huge mistake, do not listen to your wife; thank her for her generous thougths and buy her a piece of jewelry. You see, when guns are on display, wives actually look at and count them; whereupon it becomes much more difficult to slip another into the house without it costing you major reparations. This is a feminine trick; do not be so flattered that you are duped! A man is much better served to keep his gun treasures wrapped in thick gunsocks and hidden away in a big dark safe; most gals are easily convinced that a safe is exactly where guns ought to be, making it much easier for one to conduct his buying and horse-trading activities.

Anyone who can't get 25 guns in a 16-gun safe has no sense of impersonal gunspace. They don't have to move around, stretch, yawn, or relieve themselves. But the key word is SAFE.

Topgun, Now I know why I like reading your articles here, the L.C. site and in the DGJ. It is funny but oh so true. Tough to bring another "sweet thing" home in plain view, becasue it will stand out like a sore thumb. In the safe the story on how and when purchased will be at your discretion, or not.

Topgun,
You are exactly right. It is a subterfuge.
Get a great big safe that only fits guns and put it in a corner of the place where wifey would prefer not go.

I'll go along with others, who think a safe is the better answer. If you must have a cabinet, locate an Amish furniture maker. he can custom make it as cheaply as you can buy one. They made a lot of my furniture years ago (and built my home as well) and it looks like it came from Ethan Allen.. MDEC

When it comes to buying guns and women, remember:

"forgiveness is easier to get than permission"

Buy the safe. It will save you some 'spaining some day.
