The thread about the Purdey extra barrel set got me thinking. Unfortunately, my ship is still well way at sea and won't be coming in anytime soon, so this is a hypothetical question. Do the makers of best guns tune the barrels in the same way that Eyster/Heritage does? That is to say, if you are ordering a best gun today, can you tell the maker that you want the right barrel to deliver 70% of a 1 1/8 oz load of #6s inside a 30" circle at 20 yards? Or do they configure the barrels to specified constriction (IC or .010" or whatever)? Is it typical to provide the buyer with pattern sheets confirming barrel performance?

If I were paying $100k or more for a gun, I would expect the maker to do more than just ream the barrels out to a set constriction.

H&H still does as a matter of course; they have their own barrel/choke regulator, Steve Cranston. I think the others will by request. I honestly don't think the typical best-gun buyer nowadays does request it. H&H builds so many double-rifles having a regulator aboard makes sense, and a shotgun is easy by comparison.

In the old days makers loaded their own shells and could regulate a gun to the 'house' brand, and a specific load, which the client faithfully used. This is no longer the case.

If you p.m. me with your e-mail I will be happy to send you (or anyone) a chapter I did on the topic, and on Steve Cranston.

I had an opportunity to spend about 4 hours touring the H&H facility. Amazing group of craftsmen (and women). I was amazed to watch them polish (or burnish, or ?) shotgun barrels using a lead plug on a wobbly shaft. Looked like the most inaccurate, antiquated process imaginable.

Used to be common for a gun to be ordered to throw a specific pattern with a specified cartridge at a set distance. With the consistency of cartridges improving this practice is now only asked for on bespoke guns . A gun bored to this spec may not give equal performance with other cartridges .

Generous offer from Vic to provide that chapter on barrel regulation. However, I'll blow his horn for him and point out that it's included in his excellent book, "Gun Craft: Fine Guns and Gunmakers in the 21st Century". Should be in the library of all with an interest in doubleguns.

I heartily agree with Larry. Vic turned out a wonderful book that's packed with gunmaking information and very enjoyable to read.
