Ken61,
In truth, I use the cartridge case more often to clean files than remove rust,I keep one by each vise.

I use bronze wool and any light spindle oil. Very fine grit emery cloth with oil also works and will not visibly scratch metal. Bronze wool is also great for wrapping around a bronze bore brush for getting light pitting, or built up plastic fouling out of bores. Bronze wool is usually available at a good marine supply store.

Hi

Can I suggest an even older method of removing surface rust from Steel and Iron that is still in use today by Museum conservators, because it is a little slower to act not too harsh and of course it works reasonably well though more importantly does not leave things worse than when you started .
You use light oil like sewing machine oil or three in one as a lubricant and the edge of coconut shell to rub the rust with. Acid type of rust removers can play havoc with blue finishes and acts as stripper for rust blues.

I might as well mention the Chalk method as well. Rub the rust with a stick of Blackboard Chalk. You can usually find it at your local Dollar Store.

I prefer wood to plastic, leather to nylon, waxed cotton to Gore-Tex, and split bamboo to graphite.

For heavily rusted pats, Evaporust is the best stuff i ever used. Brian D is correct about it. I took an LC Smith 20ga a friend was about to discard because it was so heavily rusted and immersed it in EvapoRust. In 4 days it was ready to blue. Soft grey finish and the engraving was almost as new.

Google is your friend.

spindle oil noun

Full Definition of SPINDLE OIL

: a light fluid lubricating oil from petroleum suitable for oiling the spindles of spinning machinery and also for other light high-speed machinery

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spindle oils are a type of low-viscosity mineral oils marketed for use in lubrication of high-speed machine spindles.[1] Spindle oil is free from gumming properties.[2] Since the viscosity is so low the oil runs off the surface of the spindle during shut-down periods, the spindle oil may be doped with additives that prevent rusting. Since the spindle oil often is used in textile factories it is also important that it doesn't stain the textiles.

Shell Spindle® Oils are premium quality, highly refined lubricating oils formulated for use in high-speed, lightly loaded bearings, running at speeds of 20,000 to 40,000 RPMs, found in textile spinning frames and in automated machine tools.

I think Ace Hdw calls it turbine oil and sells it to lube electrical motors and fans.

A homemade machine oil can be made with SAE20 motor oil, Mineral Oil, and Kerosene. Mix it at a 2:2:1 ratio.
