Gentlemen:

I am in need of some jacketed bullets for a .38-40. Remington and Winchester both used to offer 180 grain bullets specifically for the .38-40, but it seems they have been discontinued. If any of you good folk have some hanging around collecting dust I would gladly pay you Tuesday...

Respectfully,

Glenn

Glenn, I have a couple boxes of 50's vintage Winchester factory ammo if that would be of any help.

If I recall correctly, the 38-40 cartridge uses bullets with
the same diameter as the 10mm or 40 S&W, hope this helps.
Ruger once made a Blackhawk with interchangeable cylinders
for 38-40 and 10mm.

Gentlemen:

Thanks to you all for the replies. Terry, thanks for the welcome. I am doing quite a bit better and am beginning to have something of a life.

The point of this exercise is the possibility of deer hunting in Indiana, where they only allow shotguns or pistol caliber rifles. I happen to have a Marlin 94 in .38-40 which fits the rules. The bore is pretty rough and I expect there would be issues with cast bullets, which is why I was looking for jacketed bullets. I have had the offer of the loan of a mold, so I might try cast bullets anyway.

.40 caliber bullets do work in the rifle just fine, but I wonder if the pistol bullets offered would hold up when meeting a deer at 1500 fps. Do any of you have any experience with this?

Thanks to all,

Glenn

I have exactly what you are looking for. I'll try and find the correct drawer early this week…keeping your tag line in mind. I've only shot a few in an old Colt I don't own any longer.

Glenn,
I can strongly recommend 180 great FN cast bullets -RCBS-

I use them in my 94 Marlin very well. I can bring a hundred or more to Lodi for you. I use ALOX liquid lube and some 2400 powder with them for excellent results.

Glen, I called my friend who said he sold everything when he sold his rifle in that caliber. Sorry. Good to see your post!
