I just obtained this beautiful Griffin and Howe Sporter. I said it is mine for a while because, like the land we own we are merely caretakers of these wonderful things, until it is time for someone else to care for them. It is a 30/06 serial number 1512. I am told it appears at pages 181 and 182 in S.R. TRUESDELL'S BOOK THE RIFLE, ITS' DEVELOPMENT FOR BIG GAME HUNTING. P.S. I did not buy it from Champlains on Guns International.

Amazing. It looks like it is brand new.

Where did you find it? If quality deer were sporterized 03s and Krags, I would starve to death in no time. I'm always impressed with the rifles you guys find right out there in plain sight.

Brent: I had been looking at this rifle for quite some time, and the original price when it was at Champlain was quite reasonable $3995, but more than I wanted to put in it. The gun was sold over 6 mos. ago to someone, even though [amazingly] Champlain's ad is still up on G.I. I located the private owner accidently a while ago and he was trying to make money on the rifle. Later this week, I saw the rifle listed once again, at a much lower price and had a credit with the company. So with another reduction, on top of the FIRST large reduction and my credit applied and free shipping, I just couldn't let it pass by.

Here is the picture from Truesdell"s book. I held that rifle a few years ago but was a bit concerned with how much it appears to differ from the original.

That said it is a nice rifle and has that G&H look and feel that they are famous for.

No, it's the same rifle. Compare the one from Truesdell's book with the ad Champlin Arm's had here

If you look at the photos from Champlin you can see the piece used to fill where the G&H mount was originally.

Got home from the N.Y. Adirondack Sporting Show and put my hands on the G&H rifle. First observation, the stock contour on this rifle is the nicest, lightest, most delicate contour of ANY G&H I have ever handled, and I have handled many! It only weighs 7.35 lbs. It has the nicest feel on any rifle I've owned. It is 99% in condition and despite what one ad said about it being possibly re blacked and re oiled, it is definitely original in its' finish, in both cases. There is only a small 1/8 in. chip repair [glued back in]on the edge of the trapdoor buttplate and a small scratch between the initial shield and sling stud. Otherwise it is virtually mint, the bore appears unfired. The trigger has a tiny bit of creep, otherwise crisp and breaks at 2.25 lbs. This rifle is missing its' front sight hood and I am going to locate one, asap. This rifle is definitely a keeper.
