Hello everyone I have a Philadelphia Sterlingworth, and the forcing cones/chambers have been lengthened at some time in its life.
They now measure 3 3/4" they are smooth with no tool marks and look factory done, but I don't think Fox did them in that length.
I took measurements of the barrel thickness and was wondering what other barrels measure, and what others thought.
chamber L .208 R .206
Forcing cone L .099 R .095
9" from breech L .052 R .055
9"from muzzle L .035 R .036
I have found some recommendations for Damascus barrels but I cant find any for regular barrels
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Gary

I think they are certainly well over the minimum safe
thickness and I would have NO hesitation

We need the end of the chamber (just before the forcing cones) wall thickness please. If greater than .100 I fully agree with Leighton.

Gary: I measured my 1913 12g Sterlingworth that I had Briley lengthen the forcing cones and remove significant pitting in the barrels. Here are the numbers:
End of chamber L .107 / R .109
End forcing cone L .097 / R .102
9” from breech L .040 / R .045
9” from muzzle L .030 / R .033

When you say 3 3/4" is that to the end of the chamber or the end of the forcing cone. Is this a 2 3/4" chamber with a 1" cone?. I assume those .200+" chamber measurements are taken at the Breech end & not the forward end of the chamber. Often that is the most critical measurement of all, especially on a lengthened chamber.

Thank you all for the replies and information.
Drew thank you very much for taking the time to measure your sterlingworth.
I am new to measuring barrels and I am not Shure that I am measuring in the right areas for the forcing cones and chambers.
I have included a drawing of the areas that I am measuring and would appreciate some advice.
Thanks again
Gary

Gary: I can't tell if the R .095 is the end of the chamber or within the forcing cone. It would be better to record the MWT at 2 3/4" and 3 1/2" (the end of the forcing cone). Because the taper angle of the exterior of the barrel is usually less than the angle of the forcing cone, the WT of the cone may be greater than the end of the chamber (but is not in my Sterly with lightweight barrels; the gun weighs only 6# 8oz with 28" barrels). The Hosford gauge is marked, but I had to affix a measure on my Bill Henry gauge

Keep at it brother; it's a pain at first but the more you use the gauge, the easier it gets. And pretty soon all your friends with vintage doubles will want their barrels measured smile
