Thank you for sharing that. I can't seem to come up with anything that makes sense right now. Gil

Mark,

Thanks for telling us about Moose. I think many here know exactly how you are feeling.

Thanks too Damascus for your contribution as I write this with my English Springer Jasper laying at my feet.

I can't imagine not having a dog.

Jolly

Good dogs and great companions come in all breeds. I had often said the best dog I had ever owned was a female black and tan hound. I don't mind saying the day I had to carry Ruby to be put down, I cried like a baby. I never thought I would have another dog that was as complete a hunter and companion. But I was wrong. I found (or she found me) a GSP that in her own way was every bit the the dog Ruby was.
I don't know if you will ever find the equal of Moose but I am betting that a heart as yours and with the love of dogs you will be twice blessed.
Sorry for your loss.

While he may now lie under the cedar, he will be forever buried in your heart. It's a tough thing to lose a family member. Gil

" 'This soldier, I realized, must have had friends at home and in his regiment; yet he lay there deserted by all except his dog. I looked on, unmoved, at battles which decided the future of nations. Tearless, I had given orders which brought death to thousands. Yet here I was stirred, profoundly stirred, stirred to tears. And by what? By the grief of one dog.'

Napoleon Bonaparte, on finding a dog beside the body of his dead master, licking his face and howling, on a moonlit field after a battle. Napoleon was haunted by this scene until his own death."

That's a very nice farewell to Moose, Mark. Glad you got him into some of the fairly scarce sharpies in ND, and wish he could have made the trip north to chase grouse and woodcock--and that we'd been able to get him a last Iowa pheasant. The hard part for us is that we live so much longer and end up burying so many bird dogs.

" To mark a friend's remains these stones arise; I never knew but one- And Here He Lies"

George Gordon (Lord Byron) from the inscription on his dog, Boatswain's
grave at Nottinghamshire, Newstead Abbey.

I'm sorry for your loss-------George

We are lucky to share our adventures with our most loyal companion. Thank you for sharing your adventures.

Our gun dogs will never say they are too tired or have jobs to get done this weekend. They will never laugh when you miss the best bird of the day. They will always be ready to make the best of the day.

Take comfort in the knowledge that you gave him the best life you could.

I'm 19 and i bought my first gun dog this year; Meryn my english springer spaniel. I only hope that together we have the same adventures you have enjoyed with your dog.

It's a total drag losing a good bird dog. It seems like nothing ever happens to the sorry ones'. I've often wondered if you built a dog house on an interstate, a sorry dog would live forever, but a good bird dog............well, a good one wouldn't last even 30 seconds.
