Anyone have experience with this French maker? I have only seen a couple of their guns for sale in the US and never handled one. This particular one looks to be a fair amount of gun for the price, given that it is a subgauge sidelock in as new condition with nice engraving, a skeleton buttplate and makers case (though the gold pins are not entirely to my taste).

The best faux rendition of SLE you're likely to find. Very solid gun that given proper care will last at least one lifetime. His asking price is too high.

Agree with PJ about the price. You did notice the right barrel has a guy's name chiseled into it, right?
You couldn't really duplicate that gun for that money today, but, it is a French boxlock, and I doubt anyone is standing in line waiting to buy one. Even one without a name chiseled into it.

Best,
Ted

What he did to the right barrel is not enhanced by what he did to the left barrel. Not sure why anyone would do that to their gun barrels - I thought that was what stock ovals are for.

Vouzelaud makes sidelocks - I am curious as to the tipoff that these are faux?

I believe the gun is a sidelock. The name on the right barrel looks like the importer's name, which is required by "customs",a lot better than the electric pen used on so many imported guns.

I'd like to know why it is claimed to be a side plated gun, too. I've never seen a side plated box lock with 8 pins plus the tumbler axle, gold plated or not.

And, if it is indeed a side lock, as I believe it is, I'd sure like to see the insides of those locks.

Apparently, the two pins on the bottom of the action is the tipoff. A true side lock would only have a trigger plate pin, I am told.

Maybe someone here able to converse in French could email Vouzelaud and ask.

Somebody needs to write the Story of the French Double Gun, like Terry Wieland did for Spanish guns and MM did for AH Fox. Starting with Lafaucheux all the way up to modern Verney Carron atelier guns, there has to be a good story to be told.

Volunteers?

It is a most difficult task. Mounds of research of most obscure makers & their sourcing need to be performed. Pretty much a lifetime effort of a labour of love with little monetary return.

Kind Regards,
