Just wondering if anyone has experimented with putting rifled tubes in a shotgun to use centre fire rifle cartridges?

I have a 38-55 tube for my 20 gau. SxS. I've had a "Neider?" firing pin installed also at the recommendation of my smithy. Might also have a pressure relief groove machined in. So I suppose any low pressure cartridge might be adapted. --- John

drop in rifle tubes in a shotgun dont seem to work all that well. too much vibration results in poor accuracy?

In Germany rifled inserts are quite common, they are called an "Einstecklauf" they are usually fitted to the barrel and use the guns extractors also. Just Google the German word and you will find quite a bit of info.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Ed,
In addition to Oskars remarks, several makes of full length einstecklaufs are adjustable for point of impact at the muzzle, and are avaliable in calibers from 22LR to 375H&H. Even the short ones are accurate enough to be really useful, especially if left in place after final regulation. As proof, I have taken hare, squirrel, racoon, fox, and bobcat, and a deer(accidently)with einstecklaufs in my drillings.

No, but one can get nice handling IZH SxS .45-70. Another good one not available here is 9,3x54R. frown While small calibers like .30-06 in this weapon are heavy the large bore is quite nice. The cost is about $750.

Remington at one time made rifled tubes for their double shotguns. I have one in .40 50 Sharps bottle neck caliber. It is an all steel full length tube threaded at the muzzle for a nut with a taper on the rear end to center the tube in the bore. The insert has a sliding extractor like the ones found on Briley small bore shotgun inserts.

I forgot to mention. That 750 buys iron sights, means of attaching scope and ability to regulate barrel poi. I'm guessing for less than set of them antiqued Remington barrel inserts?

I don't think the Remington inserts were intended to be used in pairs as there was no means of adjusting point of impact. They did have a tab on the rim that mated with a notch in the breech of the shotgun so that they would be oriented the same every time they were installed. I bought my single tube a number of years ago for $75 as I recall, off an online auction site.
