I have a post 1913 Ideal grade LC with a Hunter single trigger.
I am not much enamored with this trigger and having a pre 1913 double trigger gun available am wondering if I can change out the single for the double trigger. I would have a gunsmith do the work but am wondering if such a project is feasible?

It's been done often, but a word of advice--- make sure you choose a 'smith that is familiar with Elsies, as there is less wood in the head of the stock of a HOT gun, AND--don't let him keep the HOT unless he pays you for it.
There's a demand for used HOT's.

Buck Hamlin of Pevely, MO has done many HOT single trigger to double trigger conversions and does great work. Buck has done one such conversion for me; an early 5E that had been poorly converted from an original double trigger gun to a single trigger using a HOT trigger unit. That said, I don't know why you'd want to eliminate the factory original HOT trigger and lower the value of your gun. If the trigger is not functioning properly, the problem is most likely very minor; and Jerry Andrews of West VA can repair any Hunter HOT trigger problems you may be experiencing. Jerry repaired a HOT trigger issue on a Grade 3E Smith I owned and I never had another problem with that gun. If you visit the L.C. Smith forum, someone there will give you Jerry's contact information (and I'm sure Jerry could do the single to double trigger conversion if you do go that route).

Some people pay extra for the HOT. Instead of changing over does it make sense to sell this one and buy another? I understand if this is a family gun but if not you might be better off in the long run to just locate what you want instead of paying for the conversion. And a "fixed" HOT, done by someone who does not know exactly what they are doing, is a gun I would not even want in my gun room. Since yours is not "fixed" but working properly I just think about selling it.

Thanks guys for the responses. This is a customized LC Smith with stock by Klaus Hiptmayer and engraving by Heidi Hiptmayer.
I have not had a professional smith look at the gun. All of my other doubles including my OUs are double trigger and that was why I was leaning in having this gun changed. Reconsidering based upon your input I believe I will leave as is. Slate

If Klaus and Heidi restocked and finished your gun it should be of top quality. I'm sure Klaus can change the trigger with little problem.

Does anyone know when Heidi Hiptmayer started her engraving in Canada, and when she passed away? I understand she was Ferlach trained. Maybe Klaus too? Thanks.

With kind regards,

Your trigger plate would need to be changed out completely since the HOT plates are different than DT plates. Sears on lock plates need to be changed too.

If your gun is cutom engraved, the trigger plate swap might add to the difficulty of the job.
