Definitely larger shot. I'd rather have one penetrate into the vitals than half dozen embedding in the flesh. I also have settled on #7 for anything small enough to put into my game vest.

After many years of pheasant hunting, I use No 5 shot primarily for them. I have 12ga loads of 1 to 1-1/4 ounce depending on the situation. One ounce is fine for most pen raised birds. Large shot kills better and most often passes through the bird for no pellets in the meat. I also have a few No 4s in my vest if the ranges get longer.

In my opinion, there is no game bird that should be shot with #10 shot. Believe it or not there are a few idiots out there shooting wild turkeys with #9 sized shot....

I've shot railbirds with #10 shot and it worked really well. But the shots are mostly very close, and it's kind of a traditional thing to use very small shot on them anyway. I don't know as I'd shoot it at anything else really, unless maybe it was awful small and awful close and my choke was real open......

If you read some of the classic literature on woodcock hunting--John Alden Knight's book "Woodcock", for example--you'll find that 10's were once apparently fairly popular as woodcock loads. Not sure why, based on my experience. But some people, back "in the day", must have had better luck with them than I did.
