I'm considering selling a few lesser guns that I don't shoot anymore and buying a Spanish sidelock game gun. Since I've owned neither, I would appreciate some input on the members preference....the Arrieta or the AYA? I'm not against having a good, well taken care of used gun; I'm interested in the pros and cons of each.

That's one of the answers I hope to get....I'm not up on the grades of AYA's or Arrietas.
I'd buy both and give you the least favorite, but wouldn't want you to have to add on to the house just to store another gun. You're the only person I know that probably has more than Elmer Keith ever did.

Hi, if I had to pick between the two makers, it would have to be Arrieta. I've owned several different models of the AyA line, but IMO, Arrieta has the edge on overall care that went into the the making of the gun. This is based on comparing like quality models, say an Arrieta 557 to a AyA Number 2 for example. Of course there may be a difference from gun to gun, I'm just talking in general. I would not count out the offerings by Grulla or Garbi.
Best thing to do is look at each in person and see what one tickles your fancy.

Good Luck!!!

Greg

I have an AyA Number 2 two barrel set in 20 and 28ga and just love it. It is a very well made gun and has been troublefree since day 1

When I sought out to purchase a custom-built Spanish gun several years ago I was considering either an AyA #2 or an Arrieta 570. I ended up ordering the Arrieta because:

1. It was 100% hand engraved vs. machine engraved and hand chased. In addition, I also made a couple of modifications to the standard 570-style engraving at no extra cost--that couldn't have been done with the mechanical engraving of the AyA.
2. It had chrome lined bores at no extra charge vs. an extra charge with the AyA.
3. I had a choice of rib styles with the Arrieta, AyA didn't mention anything about different rib styles even being available.
4. The finish on Arrietas was reported to be better.
5. Most options could be spec'd with the Arrieta at no additional cost vs. most of these same options were add ons with the AyA (longer LOP, longer than 28" barrels, initial oval, etc.)
6. The person I dealt with at Arrieta spoke fluent English--not so the people of AyA.

The above reasons were enough for me.

Excellent points!!! AyA does have those "extras" for a custom gun. Good post WS!

Best!

Don' t buy either new unless you absolutely need a bespoke gun - Spanish guns have experienced a lot of price inflation recently for various reasons, and an equivalent used gun in 99% condition may cost 30-40% less.

What is your budget - that will affect the answer to some degree. Also, there are a lot of Arrietas out there with Orvis or G&H markings. Often, those guns go for less even though they came from the same factory.

Such a long, long time to be gone, and a short time to be there.
