Recently I sold a Winchester Model 21, 20 gauge field grade to a gentleman who promptly sent it back because he said the chokes had been opened up. The Cody letter said the chokes were M & F. He said that they "miked 11" and 26" according to his smith. Not being too savvy about chokes, what do those numbers mean and what should M & F chokes measure on a 20 gauge?

According to Schwing's M21 book, page 94, 20 gauge Full chokes could be anywhere from .020 to .030 constriction. Mod. should be .007 to .012.
The buyer needs a new gunsmith

Your gun has not been altered. I have a 21 20 that I bought for my grandson 20 years ago that was unfired. It is M&F and mikes .008 and .020. I bought another for a second grandson and it is .014 and .020. Winchester mod. is normally pretty open. I had a 12 made in mod and full and it was .015 and .030. My 20 that I had made in 1967 has skeet bores of .000 and .008 and mod. and full of .020 and .030. The 410 barrels IC and MOD are .004 and .008. All shoot great.

I presume you have his money. Don't send it back over this issue. Your gun's chokes are well within the range known for this model. The buyer should be liable for return shipping and I'd for sure collect that money prior to shipping.
Most likely, the buyer and 'smith (so called) didn't know that choke constriction, measured in thousandths of an inch ("11" = 0.011 inch constriction in diameter from choke entry to exit(eleven one thousandths of an inch)) gets smaller for smaller gauges. Full for 12 gauge = 0.035" where 20 gauge full = 0.025".

Didn't Winchester count pellets to determine choke? That would explain all the different constrictions that fell/fall into the same choke category.
Still for sale? Configuration? Barrel length? Condition? Pictures?

Winchester used ammunition of the day i.e. lead with fiber wads to determine it's choke dim's. The gunsmith is not familiar with winchester standards and probably used some other standard. Ther is nothing wrong with the chokes, in fact with todays usual factory ammunition, the gun will actually shoot tighter groups than originally!-Dick

The following link has the Win 21 choke constrictions for all gauges. Says they were taken from the Winchester Salesman Handbook and match the Schwing book. http://bluepike.tripod.com/Model21/goldmodel21choke.htm
