I don't know the engraver but it's very nice work.

I can tell you that it's a Model 42 not a model 12.

Yessir, you are correct- I spotted that also- never got into the "Baby M12" the great M42, but I sure love my Model 12's-- they didn't earn the nickname "The Perfect Repeater" without being just that- No other repeating shotgun, IMO anyway, has the "feel" of a M12-

Our military sure loved it. The German military, well, not so much.

"By the time World War II began, stocks of shotguns were too small to support the mobilization and new orders were placed. The well regarded Winchester Model 12 trench and riot guns were again procured with a total of more than 80,000 guns ordered by the U.S. Government by 1945, more than any other combat shotgun of the time. Collectors will notice that there was a change in the ventilated heat shield during WW II from the WW I design of six rows of holes to only 4 rows starting in 1942."

The Model 42 in question was definitely not engraved by Rudolph J. Kornbrath.

It was, however engraved by a very skilled engraver, most likely in the late 20th century, up to the present. The complete lack or progression marks in the cuts of the scrollwork indicate to me that the graver was powered by a pneumatic hand piece rather than a hammer.

I have an idea of who engraved the gun but I would like to see a close up of the engraver's mark or initials.

Apparently, you (CJO) are an engraver since the gun is pictured in an engraver's block. Would you mind telling us who you are?

Sorry , yes...I should have said Mod 42
Anyway, was told by one of my very reliable Canadian sources that the engraving in question was done by Ron Collins, probably at the time he was living in Canada.

BTW, there is evidence of hammer and chisel work, can't see it in the pictures Roger but there are many progression marks throughout the scrollwork.
As far as engraving goes I do a bit...I'm more of a jack of all trades and master of none.

Now CJO is trying to be modest but his projects and what I have seen of his work has been at a masters level. Not a trained gun maker perhaps but very skilled with metal, wood and a fine eye for lines and proportions. I enjoy looking at his projects just like Mr. Deweys projects.

I would still like to see a close up of the engraver's mark. I was thinking that it may have been Ron's work, because of the Canadian connection, but I don't have his mark in my files and would like to add it.

Regarding the progression marks, Your comment points up the problem of trying to assess or evaluate engraving from a photo. There is no substitute for having the gun in hand.
