There are quite a few 9.3X57mm Mauser 98's available. What I really want is a 9.3X62mm. Can the rifle be converted by just rechambering? What about the ones built on small ring '96 actions?

The rifles in 9.3X62mm get snapped up quickly and can be a bit more money. Just thinking of another way of getting to the same destination.

FWIW I would be leery of chambering a 9.3x62, pressure wise in a 96 Swede...but that is just me.

Ok. No '96 actions. Will work on the feed rails be needed? Sorry if thats a dumb question. I have never done any conversions. Just wondering if a local guy could do this or if I'll need to send it out.

The 96 actions in 9.3x57 are strong enough for 9.3x62,they are just as strong as 98s.The 98 has the "third" lug, but it does not bear on the action.In proofing the 96s, they use the same proof loads as for 98s.BTY not all the 96s were military rifles,many were purpose made as sporters.If you will resell it,a 98 will bring more.

I ask you read the following and tell me where the 57mm short-medium action converted to 62mm long action problem is overcome. This as well as the cutting away of the action ring to accomodate the conversion [especially in a small ring mauser]is not weakening the action considerably. Just Wondering?

Go back to that thread and read Wildcatter's comments.The reason everything works out is because the 6.5x55 uses a long, for caliber,bullet and the 8x57IS uses a spitzer bullet( 8x57I used a long RN);but most traditional bullets in the 9.3x62 are RN and will fit in Mag.I built my 9.3x62 with a Husky barrel in a WW2 mod 98 action without opening up the magazine(so I didn't have to open the action up either).There is plenty of room in the 8x57 Magazine box.A 9.3 HMK bullet may be too long,but I never tried one.The 98s are opened up for 30-06,because of longer oal than 9.3x62 with 286 gr bullet.

I built mine on a Husky 98 action that was already long enough. Mine was not a 96.

That's what I'm planning. A Husky from Simpson's.
