Is that the shot you picked out of the rabbit you shot? You must be one helluva shot!

I want to check my choke but I don't have one for a 410. There must be a lot of choke in my second barrel.Seems like most of all my kills have been the second barrel... and still might have to run it down. Rockdock......it must not take many because I'm not a good shot!

Back when I was a kid hunting with my dad, he had an old Eastern Arms (Stevens) .410 single. Chamber had been lengthened from 2 1/2 to 3". I saw Dad roll some bunnies way out there with a 3" load of 6's. Looking at his gun today, forend taped to the barrel, paper thin at the muzzle, I'd be hesitant to shoot 2 1/2" shells in it.

Matching pellet size to the situation(game) is more important with the .410, IMO. A poster in another thread mentioned that a single pellet in the vitals of a rabbit will kill reliably. I wouldn't argue that at all, but would say that a single #6 will do a lot more than a single #8, or even #7 1/2. I would never hunt rabs with anything smaller than #6s. You just need a bigger pellet to penetrate to the vitals. Downside to that is, less pellets per load, and that gets critical with the .410. I killed lots of rabbits as a kid with my Tenite stocked .410 and #6s, most of them sitting. Didn't have a rabbit dog.

A pattern board could answer your choke questions.

1/2 oz #7˝ = 175 pellets
3/4 oz #6 = 169 pellets
1 oz #5 = 173 pellets
1Ľ oz #4 = 170 pellets

Your count may vary a bit due to exact hardness/alloy of the lead. This is based on them all being of the same alloy thus proportional to the cube of their diameter.
