Is the border engraving on the Fox Sterlingworth hand done or stamped with some sort of machine? I am referring to the light zig zag engraving that is on all the Sterlingworths that I have seen. On one of the Sterlingworths I have the pattern seems to be slightly off from where it should be located which made me think it might have been done some how with a machine?

Thanks for the help,
Ron

a zig zag is done by "walking" an engraving tool from side to side

i assume that was the method used back then as well

Here is a video of engraving a walking line.

It's done with a chisel point graver and the "pitch" can be varied by varying the "stride" of the graver.

I takes me about an hour do do a complete Sterlingworth frame.

I imagine that the factory men were much faster.

As much as they vary, they were certainly done by hand.

It can. This is the method that I used to re-matt the repaired area of the Fox SBT rib that's detailed on my site.

One could conceivably do an entire rib but I wouldn't look forward to doing that.

This method is also used for shading lettering.

I did a whole rib on a Miroku. The hardest part was laying out the spacing. Will have to try to get the photos downloaded. Heck I even made the graver. Mark

Thanks for this info. Dewey. I had always wondered about that engraving on Sterlingworths.
