It would have taken one to one and a half hours.

It did take eight hours.

My labor rate is eighty five dollars per hour.

As a rank amateur, I can't help but wonder - how did you determine where to locate the drive-pin and vent holes? Everything lines up perfectly!

The bushing is torqued in place before it's cut from the raw stock. At that point I mark the horizontal centerline, then remove the bushing, cut it from the stock, square it and then mark the position of the drive pin holes. The holes are drilled, the bushing reinstalled and then it is filed flush to the breechface.
The vent screw slot is done in a similar fashion but is slotted instead of drilled. The actual vent is drilled in the lathe while the screw is still attached to the raw stock.

I am not sure how well known it is about the vent screw. After I read the post I rushed out to my safe to have a look at my Grulla. Sure enough, same deal. Cost me a fortune to have the thing fixed after the first guy screwed it up but I did not know till now what the problem was.

Great work as usual Dewey and do appreciate seeing whats involved in doing a repair correctly.
I was one of those amateur gunsmifs and broke of a top lever screw on a LC Smith 20 gauge after putting a dab of blue Locktite on it. In the one small bit of common sense I had I stopped at that point and turned it in for Dewey to fix, he corrected my mistake plus a couple other mistakes by the previous owner and the gun has worked flawlessly ever since, learned my lesson.
