I bought a rifle barrel liner for my 1882 Remington 10ga SxS. It's marked 10ga 40 - 2 1/2. Picked up some 40-72 brass that I trimmed to 2 1/2, also a Lyman mould. The only data I found was for the Sharps 40-72. Mine is more like a 40/60 or 40/65 with the shorter cases. Does anyone have load data for the 40/60 or 65 ? I know BP will work, but I'm trying to use nitro. Thanks for any help. Paul

Sherman Bell did a couple of very informative articles in the DGJ regarding nitro-for-black loads in rifle cartridges.
They're VERY informative and well worth a look.

40x2-1/2" was a designation for the 40-70 Sharps Straight. The 40-70 Ballard was 2-3/8". As Mr. Vicknair said, Sherman Bell and Ross Seyfried have done some great work with IMR 4198 and Reloder 7(?). I use IMR 4198 in all of my blackpowder cartridges, such as 11.15x58R, 11.15x60R and 45-70, to name a few. Good luck!

Paul, You should find some loads in CARTRIDGES OF THE WORLD. Mike

You would of course be on "Your Own" but Ross Seyfried stated on several occasions the "Formula" for 4198 in black powder cartridges was 40% of the weight of the charge of black for the 4198. Thus if it is a 40-70 it should use 28 grains of 4198.

Thanks to everyone. I had found one load with 4198, but it was with a 300gr bullet - my mould throws a 400. I believe Trail Boss will work just fine. Thanks again - Paul

There were two types of Sharps cartridges with the same powder charges. One type had a straight tapered case, and the other type had a bottleneck case. I think they were both available at the same time. Remington produced guns in the same calibers, but designated them differently. I have a Remington Hepburn rifle in .40-50 Sharps straight, but it is marked .40 1 7/8. I have worked up loads with this rifle using Hodgdon 322 powder and paper patch bullets that approximate a hot .38-55 load. One grain too much powder, and the action locks up due to the primer extruding into the firing pin hole. I also have a barrel insert in .40-50 Sharps bottle neck, but have never developed any loads for it, and if I ever do, I expect that I will run into the same problem with primer extrusion that I had with the rifle, and maybe at even lower pressure because of the large firing pin and hole. I prefer using a slower powder than 4198 because of the sharper rise in pressure with small increases in charge with 4198, so I use something like 3031 or H322.
