Long ago I was sitting on a stool watching Jack stock a gun in Enid, Oklahoma. He stopped for a minute and said, "Eh, Joe, do you know why the sun never set on the British Empire?" Feeling like a deer caught in the headlights I said, "well, uh no, Jack.......I don't." He grinned, "simply because it didn't trust them!" His point was well made because he went on to discuss who actually made many of the 'name' London guns.

About 20 years past, I had a really clean Greener that needed the wood finish redone, and I wanted to pull the wood to do it. The forend was no problem, but I had no clue how to start getting the buttstock off.

I called Jack and asked him if it would be possible for him to walk me through it over the phone, and he said "sure, no problem". Went smooth as silk. A true gentleman and master of his trade.

Rest gently in the bosom of God, Jack.

I will miss him, his opinion, his humor, and his special way of saying what he REALLY meant to say smile

I wish that I had recorded our phone chats, oh, what joy !

Jack RIP

This is very sad news, indeed. We always enjoyed our conversations with "Uncle" Jack around here. He was a wealth of both practical and historical information - which he always shared unselfishly.

When I first met him many years ago, he anointed me his long lost nephew - even though we were not related. He was always Uncle Jack after that.

Rest in Peace, old friend.

Sad news for all of us. I spoke to him via phone at the care facility in Enid about three weeks ago. He said he had plans to teach his summer gunsmithing class....just as "soon as they let me out of here". We will be hard pressed to replace his vast knowledge of British guns. I will miss his generous spirit and dry humor. RIP Mr. Jack !

Carp fishing is great...
Cunning, easily spooked, and a heck of a fight if hooked.
I'll always remember when one of my friend hooked one that proceeded on taking *all* his line and broke it after all 200 meters were gone.
This one was like a submarine and never turned once.
I got a 35 pounder that day, and it took about 20 minutes before I could net it. That's on 30lbs test line, mind you.
The only issue with them is that it is catch and release by default, as there is not that much you can do with a big one...
Small ones are not bad eating actually.

Best regards,
WC-

The loss of Jack Rowe, expatriate, apprentice, trained Birmingham gun maker is a sad loss to all interested in the care and manufacture of English made guns. The Video's that Jack made in conjunction with Brownell's provide an excellent historical insight as to the skills learned by those apprenticed to the Birmingham trade.
Jack was apprenticed to S.Wright and Son, who In later years became a Churchill subsidiary. In the book, "The House of Churchill", by the late Don Masters, we see on page 338 a group picture of Jack with Churchill staff at the 1968,Game Fair, held at Statfield Saye, The Heading, reads, "Jack Rowe,Gunmaker. "
Jack Rowe was a truly an ambassador for the many apprentices trained in Birmingham.
