These both look like good blanks to me. The first one is a bit prettier, and the second has better grain flow at the head. So, if strength were a factor, I'd go with the second. If it were for a light recoiling gun, I'd choose the first.

In reference to the second picture:

It appears to me that there is a knot in the area of head/wrist intersection. If so I would reject that blank.

I agree with Mike, the 1st blank should be rejected because of the knot's location, the 2nd blank gets the nod by default.

Hard to tell for sure but is that a bit of sap wood on the very bottom of the first blank? Tricky to work these type of blanks as well. Not a lot of extra wood to play with so you had better lay things out correctly the first time. I like the second blank better as well.
