Does anyone recommend a stockmaker? I have a friend who busted the stock on a Dickson (old) boxlock. He is looking for a complete replacement and a blank. Thanks.

A skilled stocker can often repair even a badly broken up stock to look and be as good as new -- maybe even stronger. I think Dennis Earl Smith in Tygh Valley, OR (DES/TSD here on this board) is as good as you can find. Here's a link to his website.

Simple economics, fix if possible, restock if absolute necessary. A complex repair may be near a thousand dollar while a simple restock may be three times that much. So send it out to see if it can be repaired first. Dennis Smith would be an excellent choice for a good opinion to see if a repair is a viable option.

Yes, they can. I just got this gun back. The first photo was a fairly old repair gone bad. Most would have restocked but the gun wasn't worth it plus the stockmaker who repaired it wanted to see if he was up for the challenge. It turned out so much better than I expected. With the gun in hand you would not know it had been in pieces. This was done by a forum member up here in Canada.

That is a beautiful job. In addition it was a good area to have such a huge break, there's lots of checkering to hide exterior work as well as access to internal areas to hide support pins and splints etc.

I've repaired a few as badly broken as in the pic. It's at, least to me, quite time consuming but usually rewarding. The biggest challenge is getting the checkering all lined up - if successful the rest is - "well easier". Even if it doesn't look that bad a first you can still land up with many pieces due to other cracks found along the way and need repair first. I put them back together even just to have a pattern for a future replacement. --- John
