Dear Friends:

There is a G&H Springfield on the internet advertized as a 30/06. However the barrel is marked 30/25 M.1 I have no idea what this means. Any ideas. Sorry that I cannot post a picture but look on Guns International. I have a genuine 30/06 only three digits away from this gun and am interested, but I have no idea what caliber it really is. Thanks in advance.

In your situation, I would simply ask the seller for an explanation. As the person in possession of the rifle, he is certainly in the best position to determine the significance of the marking.

My guess, given the time period, is that it is what we would call a .25-06.

The seller has 30-06 on the tag, so I assume that is what it is chambered for, or he does not know any better. It is a very early rifle, at that time I believe G&H was still assigning blocks of numbers to a specific caliber, and I believe the 400 block was for 30-06, but I do not have Michael's book handy to check that. It sure looks for all the world to me like an armory NRA sporter barrel. Neat rifle, but I can't imagine what the barrel markings would indicate.

G & H serials 101-150 and 401-500 are .30-06 per the Addendum to Michael's first book.

I just got this from the seller: "We have no idea. I have even spoken with G&H, and they have no idea. I did a chamber cast, the chamber is .30-06, bore is .308. It remains a mystery.
Thank you,
John"

Thanks to all for your opinions and knowdge. I have # 437 just two digits away from this gun, but not knowing what the heck it is, I will pass. Anyway, I appreciate everyone's input.
