I recently acquired a Springfield 1922 M1 serial 8517, I assume it was a sales rifle as it is in a NRA stock and is in the correct serial range. It is really dirty, wood is almost black and exposed metal is brown. Were these rifles finished like the NRA Sporters? (rust blue and bright bolt) I plan on cleaning up the stock and metal, I cleaned a spot on the stock and it is a nice red brown under the grime. The rifle is very original and I believe fairly rare. What is your thinking?

Congratulations! Your rifle is listed on SRS as having been sold Sept. 20, 1927. The metal finish is the same as the 1903 NRA Sporters. The bolt on your rifle should be numbered to the receiver. The barrel date should be in 1926. I hope the 1922M1 bolt is still in the rifle. The rifle would have come from Springfield Armory drilled and tapped for target scope blocks.

Thanks for the verification, the bolt is an M1 and it is numbered to the rifle. The barrel date is 9/26, receiver and barrel drilled and tapped for blocks. A prior owner had removed the slide for the Lyman 48 sight and fashioned an open sight on the scope block on the receiver, lucky he just ruined the block. After a little cleaning there is a lot more finish on the metal than I thought.

James,
Please post a picture of the Lyman 48 sight and scope block. I have seen some strange changes made to as issued sights. This may one of the modifications that I have not seen.

Gary he didn't do any thing to the 48 except remove the slide. They just screwed a cut off barrel site to the scope block.
