I recently became the caretaker of a late percussion 12GA Purdey double ML shotgun. It doesn't have a ramrod mounted beneath the barrels but the case contains an ebony loading rod. The rod has a threaded brass tip and I need a loading tip for it. The thread on the end of the rod is 12-28. Would anyone know where I could find a 12GA tip that would fit this thread? I also have a cleaning rod that came with the gun but it uses a larger thread that appears to be compatible with more modern British cleaning equipment. The cleaning rod won't fit in the case so I assume that it is a later addition to the gun. Would the gun have been originally cleaned using the loading rod with cleaning tips? If so I would also need cleaning tips threaded 12-28. I've taken photos of the gun today and I'll post them soon for all to see. One nice thing about this gun is that the dimensions are quite modern, 1-3/8 X 1-1-7/8 X 14". The bores are .732.

I looked at Track of the Wolf but nothing for that thread,

Another option is to contact Purdey. They just might send you one.

Just have a machinist make you one. Pretty simple.

Joe is certainly correct, anybody with a lathe and a chunk of 1" diameter brass rod could make one for you in half an hour.I'd gladly make one for you myself, given a drawing of what you want, and if paid for the brass and the shipping. Brass is ridiculously expensive these days at outfits like The Metal Supermarket!

Here is the photo album I promised. The gun was purchased from Jaqua's (sp) in the eighties and was used for hunting and occasional target work by a member of the international ML shooting team. The barrels are in like new condition inside. By the way, look at the photos of the percussion caps that came with the gun. The opened box contains musket caps too large for this gun's nipples. I assume that the other box, unopened, contains early centerfire primers based on the label. If anyone wants to buy them, I'll sell them as collectors' items only.

Beautiful!!! Call Purdey. If I owned a gun like that in that condition I would want something from the original maker.

OK, upon further inspection I found that there is an adaptor in the rod end with a 12-28 thread. The threads are the same as older British cleaning rods with an OD of .285. I believe that is 9/32 BSW (British Standard Whitworth). I have a solution now. Mike Rowe is going to make me a rod tip.
