Note the "P.K.E."; Paragon Krupp Ejector.

Paragon 1124 shows in my notes from about 1980 when it was owned by a Mr. Johnson in Oregon. Later the frame was re case colored and eventually the late Russ Ruppell of near St. Louis owned it. Russ put on a new forend wood and buttplate and may have corrected some problem at one muzzle.

A 16 gauge in the 1909 Paragon model is rare, but the gun's alterations detract. Originally the gun had 30 inch barrels.

From The Baker Gunner, No. 4, 1909. The new Model Nineteen-nine --

and the original Paragon Grade --

A few years later, Baker Gun & Forging Co. changed the top rib bolting on the Paragon (and higher) Grades again --

Daryl, any idea what the F.E.S. on the barrel flat and the two letter S on the bottom of the barrel lug mean?

Dave, I am not sure. Baker seemed to confuse these markings sometimes, too. P K E /NN is surely Paragon Krupp Ejector Nineteen Nine. I have seen P D, P K, N E S, L E S. And I am sure others. The first letter seems to be the Grade, Sometimes the next letter is Ejector, sometimes barrel material type, sometimes indicating a single trigger. Really, no hard and fast rules as I see it.

The F E S , in addition to the others is new to me. I can only guess that F might be Fluid, E might be ejector, S might be Steel or maybe the gun had a single trigger at one time. Oddly there are two S on the barrel lump and the font appears to be the same as in F E S. I have never seen this, either. For all we know F E S could be a man's name.

Just noticed something rather cool, those two little semicircular recesses on the back edge of the forearm iron that mate with the two little tabs that extend forward from the watertable.
