I wish to discuss the possible ramifications of drillings set up with only two springs. (my favorite drilling has three--after discharging with both triggers, just switch to the third barrel and it will fire as well without recocking) On the drilling I own with two springs, you can fire any combination that you have set, but ONLY TWO SHOTS! Then, in order to fire the third, the gun must be opened to recock...disconcerting. It occurs to me that this might explain why some drillings are regulated for slugs in the right barrel, and some for the left, although any custom order was always possible. If a drilling could only fire twice without recocking, would it make more sense for the left barrel to fire the slug so that no time would be wasted in firing the rifle then the slug. If the right barrel was regulated for the slug, then after shooting the rifle, the switch would have to be made before the right shotgun could be fired, resulting in a slight delay and interruption of concentration. Any thought? Steve

Steve,
I have been hunting with drillings since about 1965 and have never needed to shoot 3 times, in fact, I don't recall shooting twice without opening the gun. I don't know about all drillings, but the only ones I know of with two springs are hammer guns. On these, you don't need to open the gun to re-cock them.

Steve, who made your drilling? The name of the maker might offer a clue as to the nature of the action. Norbeert Klups' book, Der Drilling, pretty much covers all of the more popular actions.

Steve:

Would you happen to be referring to the Collath variants?

Interesting

My Sempert & Krieghoff drilling has three springs.
It is a 16(65)x16(65) x 8x57IR

My three spring drilling is Christophe Funk--love it. The two spring drilling I just traded for a Simson Suhl since it did not have scope mount capability. It was an ordinary and unengraved Iman Meffert. All are trigger plate boxlocks. The only time I am tempted to shoot three times is when I fire both barrels at birds and then a deer or coyote pops up and runs, which means I'm in a hurry. I have not owned a Collath, Raimey, although I SHOULD have bought one at Cabela's in near new condition (It was 9.3x72, not my favorite). Steve

Oops, meant to ask how many of the three spring drillings were regulated for the slug in the left barrel.

I am not sure that would be a easy answer to provide. I can tell you that the collath above in Ramey pic I had new springs made for and it does well with the slug in the left barrel.

As per simson, this gun is deadly accurate with slugs in the left barrel. One of my favorite and best shooters.

Drilling on the right.

Steve,
The Iman.Meffert I wrote about in the "Der Waffenschmiede" is also an ordinary trigger plate actioned drilling. It has three springs. Could you post a photo of a drilling with only two springs, so I can understand the question?
