No big problem- Brad Bachelder is finishing this task for me- as we -e-speak here. I bought a 1930's era LC Smith Ideal 12 LONGRANGE with HOT AND EJECTORS last Fall from a neighbor- his late Father bought it new in 1934- #@" F&F- He was upfront about some flaws- about 50% of the time, when you closed it, it would discharge-and double when the selector was in the RH setting- I bought it for under 1K- stock and barrel blueing 75%, showed duck blind wear, but with care- no rust, barrel dings or pits-- The only way to cure a HOT, is to have it re-set to a DT- which also means you can have an automatic safety, which I prefer-something about the size of HOT mechanism prevents the installation of the safety push rod, which cams from the top lever spindle when the gun is opened.
My other favorite LC Smith "Smith" is Buck Hamlin, and back in 2009-2010 I called him and asked what he would charge to "tune-up" a Eagle Grade 12 with HOT---He told me that he didn't like to work on a HOT equipped Smith, but would convert it to a DT configuration, for, if memory serves, around $500-plus shipping/insurance. Not a job for a rookie Smith- as the other gent has it 100& right- sears, etc. Apparently, as my LONGRANGE is a later Smith, Brad can keep the original blued trigger guard group- I can post some fotos of this Smith after I pick it up from Brad, if you would like.
