Has anyone ever seen a " C & A Weston " trade label or have a picture of one they could post for me.

Also any information of the company would be appreciated. I have found very little info so far.

Thanks

Charles & Herbert Weston, 7, New Road, Brighton, Sussex. 1867 to 1920. Also had premises at High Street, Hailsham 1905 to 1913. Charles & Arthur Weston same address Brighton 1922 to 1936. C & A Weston Ltd. 1938 to 1942. From what I understand F.A. Anderson http://www.faanderson.co.uk/ obtained the business and may have further information. Lagopus.....

For Trade Labels try Peter Dyson's web site https://www.peterdyson.co.uk/ or Henry Krank's http://www.henrykrank.com/index.php?main_page=index

Thanks Lagopus

I've searched all the sites I could find but no luck on the label or much history. I did email F.A. Anderson so hopefully they can help.

Regards

Here is what IGC has on Weston. There are three trade labels on the listing too, which I shall try to post:

Name William Weston
Other Names Charles & H Weston; Charles & Arthur Weston
Address1 7 Royal Colonnade, New Road
Address2 7 New Road
Address3 12 East Street
City/Town Brighton
County Sussex
Country United Kingdom
Trade Gunmaker
Other Address Branch at 65 High Street, Hailsham, Sussex.
Dates 1825-1970?

Notes

Reportedly, there was an Abraham Weston who was a clock and gunmaker in Lewes from 1676 to 1746, but a later Abraham Weston was recorded as a gunmaker in Lewes, Sussex from 1783 to 1798. From 1823 to 1826 he was recorded in Market Street, Lewes.
He appears to have had two sons; Edward, who opened his own business in 1823 at 43 High Street, Lewes, he remained there until 1845 but had a shop at 110 North Street, Brighton from 1838 to 1843; and William, who opened his business at 7 Royal Colonnade, Brighton in 1825 (there are reports that the business first occupied 6 Royal Colonnade, and these may be correct). In 1844 the address changed to 7 New Road, Royal Colonnade was not mentioned, there may have been a change of street name. In the 1851 census, William Weston was recorded as a gun maker employing 1 man and a boy. He was a widower aged 60 living on his own. In the 1861 census he was recorded again as a gun maker employing 1 man and an apprentice. He was aged 70 but married to Caroline aged 35! William Weston remained in business until 1866 when Charles & Herbert Weston (his sons?) took over. The firm then became know as Charles & H Weston or C & H Weston. In the 1881 census Charles Weston was recorded aged 35, living at 7 New Road with his wife, Harriet aged 22, and their son, Charles R Weston aged 6 months. Harriet's mother, Ann Parker (aged 63) was living with them probably because Harriet was unwell, she appears to have died before the time of the 1891 census.

In the 1881 census Herbert Weston (aged 46) was recorded aged 30, living at 17 Clyde Road, Preston, Brighton. By this time he was married to Annie (possibly a mistake and should have been Fannie) (aged 27) and they had a daughter, Beatrice aged 10 months. In the 1901 census Charles Weston (aged 56) was recorded living at 7 New Road, by this time he was married to Jane (aged 41). Herbert Weston (aged 50) was living at 22 Beaconsfield Villas, Preston, Brighton, with his wife (name recorded as Fannie) and their daughter Beatrice. In about 1905 a branch was opened at 65 High Street, Hailsham, Sussex. It appears to have closed in about 1912. By about 1922 it appears that Charles and Herbert had retired or died because the name of the firm changed to Charles & Arthur Weston (Charles & A Weston or C & A Weston).
Between 1936 and 1938 the firm was bought by F Vaughan who established a limited company, C & A Weston Ltd at the same address.

From about 1942 to 1992 the business occupied other addresses and traded in other goods, but in 1992 the company was bought by Jack Wood of F A Anderson, gunsmiths in East Grinstead, and the firm changed it's name to C & H Weston and moved to 12 East Street where it continues to trade. No records of the firm are known to exist.

Other Info

As C & H Weston, the firm is known to have sold cartridges under their own name and under the names "Brighton" (post 1910) and "Sixteen Special" (post 1910).
As C & A Weston the firm sold cartridges under the names "Smokeless Cartridge", "Special Smokeless", "National Smokeless", "Brighton" and "Colonnade".
