I have two bismuth projects going...
The first is for my for my blackpowder cartridge 10 ga, I am using 4.5 to 5 drams of powder and 1 1/8th oz of #4 bismuth. It patterns very well with the five dram load.
The second would be for a modern smokeless 12 ga 3" load. I'd like to use a 1 1/4 oz load. Should I go for a 1460 fps load or something like 1280 to 1330 fps? What is your experience?

I get better results with Bismuth at around 1200. Anything more seems to be all recoil and no result. The recoil increases as the square of the velocity.
Out there doing it best I can.

Hyper velocity was not a big deal back when we were shooting lead. Only when steel was the payload did it make sense to try to drive the shot as fast as possible to try to overcome the poor balistic properties of steel. My favorite lead load was 1 3/8 ounce at 1250 fps. Pattern was my concern and often used fillers to buffer the shot to get 75-80+% patterns. A lot of ducks hated to see those loads come out of the coat back in those days.

We used to use powered graphite on our hunting wads. Picked up about 100 FPS and pressure fell slightly. bill

I would check your pellet counts. My last tub of #4 were 124 to the ounce, more like a lead three in weight which has more than enough umpah at lower velocities for decoyed ducks.
My last tub of #5 though weighed out as lead #6, which I shoot as fast as possible....I think they would be kinda iffy otherwise if you had a longish shot.
Best, Mark

Thanks All,
I will weigh out my 4's tonight to see how they do. I appreciate the thoughts on velocity, as you can see my experience is with steel. My secondary gun is vintage so I'd thought I'd try bismuth this season.
My 10 ga. blackpowder load will probally do in the area of 1200. I've found I need more compression to match the Republic Mettalic 10 ga load of 5 drams of bp and 1 1/8oz of #4 bismuth. It does pattern very well though. I'll probally go with a little less powder to gain the space I need for a better roll crimp.
My 12 ga. I'll look for something in 1220 to 1250fps velocity there seem to be lots of loads in that area. Again, thanks for the help.
Thanks, Vince
