I just got a 1909 WC Scott and tonight I noticed on the barrels a VERY faint "barber pole" pattern just ahead of the chambers. No pictures because as soon as I wiped the barrels down it was gone. Nitro proof barrels on a Scott of that vintage wouldn't be twist would they?
Picture of the barrel flats in this post;

Thanks,
CHAZ

PS pardon my ignorance this is my first Brit gun

Sure looks to be fluid steel barrels looking at the barrel flats. In fact, I am sure. Enjoy your new toy. It was proofed as a 2 1/2" gun. Oh, I have both a 1906 and a 1907 Scott and both are fluid steel.

I believe that fluid steel barrels were, by that date, less expensive than Damascus. Of course there are several types of fluid steel and a number of possible barrel configurations that would impact the cost.

I have no idea what would have caused the marking of the barrels. Like I said just rubbing over it with my finger even made it go away, but it circled the whole barrel. It was most pronounced right in front of the chambers. I thought maybe it was possibly from polishing or carding the barrels?
I couldn't imagine that even an entry level Scott would have twist barrels, especially not that late (and with 1 1/8 ounce proof).
Thanks,
CHAZ

I have a Scott circa 1900 with original nitro marks and Damascus barrels. In fact a lot of gun makers were advertising guns with Damascus barrels right up to the second world war. As Chuckarman says they were usually extra in price. In fact thinking on I also have an Isaac Hollis hammerless post 1925 with Damascus barrels. Lagopus.....
