I recently bought a 28 gauge Remington Wingmaster. It could really use a bit more weight upfront to help smooth out my swing. Any reason I could not replace the plastic 3 shot magazine plug with a steel rod of similar length and diameter? Any other ideas?

Seems to me that would do it. Might want to oil the steel rod and cover it with electrician's tape to prevent rust and rattle...Geo

As I recall Remington made a steel plug for the purpose of adding weight up front for the 12 ga Wingmaster. This was primarily for use on waterfowl guns but the concept should work just as well for the 28ga if it needs more weight up front to smooth out the swing. If it doesn't work as anticipated it is a simple matter to remove & replace with the wooden plug, or maybe they use plastic these days, don't know haven't owned one in over 66 years now. I traded mine, 20 ga, in on a Parker prior to 1960 & never looked back. Two barrels just swing better for me.

They made an steel extension for the magazine to add weight to 1100 and 870's. Might find one on EBay or perhaps a old Skeet shooter has one laying around. I have added weight by replacing the plug with a steel rod or just placed a lead plug under the cap that holds the spring in under the screw on cap. I added a lot of weight by drilling a hole in the cap and added a bow weight to the cap. Moved the weight past my hand and smoothed out the swing.
First thing is to figure how much you want to add be taping weight under the barrel. 2-4-6 ounces can make a big difference. Then figure which works easier steel or lead if extra is needed. Inside or out is just a personal choice as far as I am concerned.

Thanks guys. BTW, I'm with you 2-piper. I'd much rather be shooting a 28 gauge Parker instead of a 28 gauge Wingmaster but that's a bit out of my range right now.

Numrich lists the factory item for $16.90, but they are sold out.

http://www.gunpartscorp.com/ad/308360.htmSmall gauges sole out presently, but keep your eyes open. I have them on my Remington 1100s in 28 and 410. Mike

Note I did not say I traded it in on a 28ga Parker, just said Parker. Actually it was a 12ga Trojan, but even with the extra weight I could get on a bird quicker than I could with the 20ga 870. I had started my hunting with an old 12ga J Stevens Arms & Tool Company double & that pump just didn't ever swing right, totally different feel & balance to me. I know other shoot them well but I didn't.

There are weights, as mentioned that replace the forearm (magazine) cap. Not a thing in the world wrong with the 870's. If I could only have one gun, an 870 20 gauge would be high on the list. Affordable, great shooters, and very utilitarian.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/GWS-Pro-Hunter-STABILIZER-For-Compound-Bows-BLACK-6-WEIGHT-8-OUNCE-NEW-ARCHERY-/390973441566?hash=item5b07d5461e:g:gkAAAOSw~FNUY86M $11.00 on EBay. Adds 8 ounces. They come in different weights. I took an extra magazine grip cap and drilled a 1/4" hole in the end. Screwed this in it and placed a self locking nut on the inside. I used camouflage because the gun I was adding it to was a camouflage 11/87 3 1/2" gun my son used for snow geese. With big, heavy loads it was too light and was a handful. Added half a pound inside the butt stock and one of these and made it a fun gun to shoot snow geese.
