This year will be a little different. Instead of flying up to God's country, I'll be taking a well-used F-150 up to leave with my in-laws to replace their well-worn but faithful 1989 version (I do hope old Fords have a little life left in them at 150K!). A pilot friend of mine is relocating down to Orlando to be closer to his work hub, so his regular ride to DIA here is now headed to Frostbite Falls. It's been very well-cared for, but 1997 trucks are getting to be a bit seasoned now. Most of it's brethren here have long-since departed for old Mexico (where most of our older, used trucks now seem to end up). I can haul toys with abandon on this trip, so lots of good vino, cheese, a little elk, ammo, and even extra birdguns may make it this trip. I do have to be careful of my temporary Colorado plates though, .....every cop between here and there is going to be interested in seeing if I'm hauling a bale or two.

With the temp CO plates and a smokey old Ford, the cops may think that smoke is your Cheech and Chong impersonation.

Lloyd,
Planning to be in the neighborhood around the same time as last year. Wife and kid along, hope to get some time on LOTWs with the owners of the shack we stay at. A little grousing, too.
I hear good things about the grouse numbers this year.

Best,
Ted

I had a 1967 Ford F-100 with a three speed on the column and a straight six. I bought it to work on a rental property remodel in 1984. I had it four years and sold it to a neighbor of my parents who had it repainted and drove it for a long time. I'm sure someone is still driving it somewhere. I think I replaced a water pump . . .maybe. I can't remember for sure.

Lloyd,

Not to worry....my 1998 F-150 was given to my son with 12k on the clock he gave it back to me with 249K on it. I drove it well past 250 k and sold it to one of my employees whose son promptly wrapped it around a telephone pole.... it would probably still be running otherwise.... 4.6 V8 by the way.

Ted:

Looking forward to it! My truck project has turned into a bit of a money pit, but I suspect it will be worth it in the end.
I'm counting on the enduring qualities that make old Ford trucks much loved.

My 77 F250 resembles that remark.

Qualities?
rides like a log wagon...check
horrible gas mileage......check
Ah, I haven't found anything I can't fix myself...check! smile

Yeah, the old girl is worth the trouble

Thanks folks! The Ford trucks do seem to age a bit more gracefully than their peers. That old 300 six in the '89 seems to be indestructible. Unfortunately, boreal forest weather has taken it's toll on the body. This one's been in the high & dry for its entire life so it should have lots of good years left up there.
