Decisions, decisions.....the agony of choosing. Dove season is but 9 days away and the pressing question is which gun to open the season with. Do I take a 28 ga., one of the 16's, or a 12 ga. with light 3/4 oz. loads, or be sporty and daring with a .410? O/U or SxS? Mojo decoys on the tank with layup shots or the Fox duck gun and the high passers leaving the roost? I know the others will be kicking and screaming in the vault when I leave them behind.
I think I'll go retro; back to the days when I was a youngster and following the Old Man around on South Texas dove hunts and carry a restored Winchester model 12 16 gauge with 26" imp cyl barrel.
Might as well go the whole nostalgia route with a field lunch of rat trap cheese, crackers, vienna sausage, red soda pop and a moon pie.
Now where the hell is the Old Man's moth-eaten camo Jones hunting cap?

I concur, with half the dove field mowed, I don,t know which gun to take afield, 20, 28 or 410. Wouldn't be nice if all our decisions would fall into this category.
Decisions, discisions.

It would be hard for me to bring myself to use a 12 ga. in the early seasons. Sometimes I will on the tough old late season migratory birds, when the cold north winds blow, but in the early seasons I prefer to be more sporting and use the little guns. It is just so much easier for me to limit with a 12 ga., that I prefer to test myself on the early birds with .410s.

Wow!, 54 boxes. Christmas came early for you. I hope the opener is great for you Gary, and everyone else, too.

We're in the "short rows" here .......

9 days and a wake-up!!!!!

Gary, Great painting. I initially thought it was a John R. Cowan.
I'd shoot a .410 opening day but for the fact I like to eat dove and in that I can't eat what I don't shoot, I best move up gauge a tad. smile It'll be a 1920s Darne R-10 in 16 gauge with my Ithaca M37 16 as a back-up gun. I'll shoot 7/8 oz. Polywads, #8 or #7.5 out of the Darne. The Ithaca shoots Herters 2.75" 1 oz. #8. Gil

Nice painting! Tough cover to find birds in though, better have a dog or carefully pick your shots! I will probably use my marlin 90 16 for the opener. Won't be much corn cut it seems, that could bode very well for our fields.

The sunflowers were looking good on my last visit to the club.

Rows were disked in the last week and the report is that the doves are already hitting the area in numbers.

Can't wait.

I'm thinking Fox guns for the opener in HE, XE and BE.
