I spent many an hour in this bar back when I used to do a lot of pheasant and duck hunting in Nebraska. Anyone else on the forum ever been there?

It's really gone downhill the last few years. Last time we were there was three years ago...all the mounts are old, dirty, and ratty looking...food very average with service less so.

We won't be back again.

I'm not surprised and suspected this would happen once Ole passed. It was a great place with some spectacular mounts in the years gone by. All of the mounts as I remember it had a plaque underneath stating where and when Ole acquired it and the rifle and caliber used.
Jim
BTW: These used to be a place called Tom's Small Game Bar closer to North Platte. The mounts consisted of a couple of rabbits, mangy pheasants and one bobcat. The notation under the bobcat stated "Acquired in the Sand Hills with one Ford 150 pickup four speed dual exhaust"! wink

THe "Buckhorn Exchange" in Denver was another such place. Mr. Zeetz ran the register with a Colt New Service by the till. Lots of interesting mounts and characters. When Zeetz died, it went downhill pretty fast. I think it was purchased by a couple of wealthy guys and redone...Havnt been there in years,,,May be gone

Been to both Ole's & Buckhorn Exchange.

Wasn't impressed much by Ole's, but I could see that back in the day it was really something.

The Buckhorn offers so much more as far as overall history. It still hold Colorado liquor license #1. The place has seen many of the legends of the old west including Bill Cody & others. I'm a railroader who has spent most of his career working at the locomotive shop across the street from the Buckhorn. The Buckhorn is steeped in railroad lore about guy's getting paid & cashing their checks at the bar. Lots of crazy things have gone on there including actual gun fights back in the old west days.

Both of these places give a great snapshot of American history in their respective times.

Not that I'm aware of. The founder of Ole's was a guy named Rosser O Herstedt who was a native of Paxton and somehow acquired the nickname of Ole.
