The Morphy auction for Nov.5 has a Springfield custom rifle with one of those trap-modified Winchester buttplates. The stockmaker clearly seems to be the same one who built my rifles using this type of plate. The shape of the buttstock is identical to mine, and the style of the checkering is very similar only less elaborate than mine. If there are any ideas out there as to possible stockers, please post them. The item I'm referring to is #665.

Do you have a link to this? I dn't know the Morphy auction. Sounds interesting though.

That's a very nice rifle. I just can't bring myself to bid on another one, however.

PhysDoc, Yes. You can't see the butt plate, but the profile indicates it's a Winchester, and the description says it has a trap. I'm certain it's the same source as mine and the same as pictured here a while back. Instead of a slim forearm with a schnable, my rifle has a semi-beavertail forearm. Whoever this stock maker is, his work is as good as any from this era. The Morphy rifle has a wrist repair. It ought to go for a modest price.

I gave Bill my e-mail address and he sent me some pictures to post of his 1903, which shares many similarities to the one on the Morphy auction. I am glad I did this, because it is certainly a beautiful rifle. Here are the pictures.

That's a gorgeous '03. Neat Whelan stock with terrific checkering and carving. Thanks for posting these.

Thanks, PhysDoc, for posting photos. I'm stumped to guess a maker. August Pachmayr comes to mind because he was a good carver, but the stock's style just isn't his. Any suggestions???

$600 plus BP. I like it but managed to come out of the auction with nothing. I just couldn't bring another gun home before I sell something. How about that Kornbrath gun? #451
