Sweep, No offense taken. It is a common misspelling. As Eightbore mentioned, the 1900 company catalog has the misspelled word on its second page.(Think 1900, a year either way) Must not have had proof readers back then. Anyway, I am just trying to help get it right. The company was named after the city of its origin, Ithaca New York. The gun you describe sounds correct in every way. Should this gun become your first Ithaca, congratulations! That gun is listed as a 16 gauge Field grade with 28 inch barrels. Shipped in 1928.

Welcome to the forum. Don't take the comments personally. There are alot of people who spell Ithaca, Itica. I am from Syracuse NY and I use to spell it Ithica. There are great bunch of folks here, and most times, except for an occational misanthrope, the correction is a gentle tongue in cheek ribbing. Mr. Snyder wrote an excellent book on Ithica ,oops, Ithaca doubles as well as on the 37's. Stay tuned.

Well; I had no idea that a misspelled word offends anyone. Welt yoo god thad ded rong, lil mizspellr. Ime allayz uffendit bye soch thangs. Actually, I think the reaction is due to the fact that the misspelling of Ithaca seems to spread like a biological weapon of mass misinformation and the folks here are always eager and willing to fight this terrorist threat!~)

Mr Snyder; Thank you for the information. Your post started me thinking that maybe I wrote down the wrong letter so I made a trip back to check the gun once again. It is a F, it also has the #4 on the left barrel flat and the #2 on the rt barrel flat. Being this gun was made in 28 will it be chambered for 2 1/2 shells? And what is your opinion of the smokeless powder steel barrels. Are these good guns that I can still take out for a round or 2 of sporting clay a couple times a year?(using the proper loads of course)? Thank you again for the information.

The 2 and 4 means mod and full. It might be short chambered, this is about the time the change occurred. Nothing wrong with the barrel steel and if the stock is sound and tight, it will be good for another 50 years or so. I was shooting a 1929 20 ga. NID today.

Well; I had no idea that a misspelled word offends anyone. Just don't call it a 12 bore. dubbletrubble- Righ----toe mate, as this is a 16 bore and some owners of 16 bores can become testy when their favored bore is confused with the 12 bore!* Doug *PS for those of you not following along on the other thread, my comment here is "tongue in cheek." http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbt...age=1#Post39554

The NID was designed to be strong and to meet the 1925 SAAMI standards. The modern 1992 SAAMI standard is almost exactly the same, except for some statistical methodology.
You should be able to shoot any modern standard American shell in the gun with perfect confidence.
Welcome to the Ithica... oops... Ithaca bunch.
