Acheveur - finisher.

Still working and compiling but as you find terms, metallurgy, industry specific, please send them to me and I'll post. This is still the best term specific français-anglais, English-French dictionary on the internet. My wife made some disparaging comments about my dictionary in front of my fluent French speaking son. I countered..."Tell me in French the terms for a "Damascus barreled, side-lock, engraved, case-colored, top-lever, double-trigger, SxS 16 bore shotgun made in Saint-Étienne." The conversation got real quiet.

Argo, you did very well, my congratulations for your translation. I have a small remark Armurier is not a gunshop owner but a gunmaker.
Cheers, greetings from Belgium, Marc.

Thanks Marc. Actually we've been operating under the impression that the definitions are as follows:
. .Armurier - Gunsmith, or gun shop owner
. .Armurerie - Gunsmith's shop or gun store.
. .Arquebusier - Gun maker (although this might be a bit archaic)

Welcome corrections.

I lived three years at Square Montgomery in Brussels and know Belgium well. Salut.

Gene

Gene, French is my second language but my knowledge is academic. Arquebusier was the most used in a long past time, but of course still correct. I am also aware that my English is not correct and that I write faults, but I improuve myself each and every day.
Cheers, greetings from Belgium, Marc.

Hi Mike, thanks for these words. https://www.egun.de/market/item.php?id=19686930
Mike I know that you like Germans guns and in the link above there is a drilling in a rifle kaliber that it is the first that I have seen in this rifle kaliber.
Cheers, have a nice weekend, Marc.

Gene, you beat me to "coup de foudre". Also happened to me in France. But unlike yours, mine did not take. A lightning bolt I should have ducked. But the temptation was overwhelming. I was spending the summer in France with a group of American high school French teachers. The ratio was interesting: 36 women, 4 men. One of the men was over 60. Another one was gay. Might have been a case of my making a bad choice.

In the French funnies, Flash Gordon was Guy L'eclair.

Arquebusier is an interesting one, because if you go back far enough it referred to the military soldier who carried an arquebus.

But for the time frame I collect, early 19th century French breech-loading guns, it pretty much exclusively meant gun-maker and was the primary term for that.

I also made this Custom GPT in ChatGPT that is a French->English or English>French translator focused on antique firearms. It does a really good job. Feel free to use it:

https://chatgpt.com/g/g-UzmRlHeQs-french-translator

You can give it text, images, screenshots, files, etc.

I use it when corresponding with my French friends or for all sorts of translations purposes.

Here is a dumb example.... https://chatgpt.com/share/c3cfecfa-3805-43c7-af95-b53b5bab6fc7

And a less dumb example:

Aaron, the key is the training you did. If you go on a standard chatGPT and ask specific technical words you won't get much until you rephrase the question over and over. But AI is nothing if it is not trained and it looks as if you done a great job there. I started this traditional dictionary 7 years ago before AI. It really should be integrated into an AI training program.

And our fellow members of this board really should start looking at this technology; it truly is revolutionary. I am not using it yet...lazy. My wife is driving me crazy double checking half the things I'm saying with her buddy chatGPT. It will translate, interpret, speak hundreds of languages, write, spell check, fact check, provide instructions and it is trainable. .it's not at the point where you can say, "see dove, shoot dove". . but the military is already going there.

The times they are a-changing.
