Is the bbl address & caliber roll marked w/a die,,or hand engraved.

Newtons designation for 30-06 was '30 U.S.G.' on the few rifles I've seen.
If you go to this site/ Newton Rifles, Iroquois Arms Collectors and scroll down near the bottom there is a close up pic of the roll die marking of that address and caliber.
https://sites.google.com/a/iroquoisarmscollectors.org/iroquoisarmscollectors/home/newton-arms-co

One of the auction rifles above has a replaced 03Springfield bbl and the caliber is hand engraved on it (nice job too!) I don't think it has the Newton name and address on it though I may have missed it. I'd assume if there it would be hand cut also.

The only thing I can think of off hand about the rough turned appearance over the chamber area of the rifle in question is that a surplus '03 bbl was used to re-bbl it (yes they are threaded the same). The 03 bbl could have that area shaved down a bit to remove the military rear sight spline cut in the bbl, or perhaps the spline cut filled and then turned to true and finish it off.
The rough appearance may be more picture than reality but it does beg another look.,,and wether the markings on that bbl are roll die imprinted or hand engraved.

just some thoughts..

MY first Newton, acquired many years ago, was a 1916 Model with a Springfield barrel. How it got in that configuration, I don't know. In any case, I had a .256 Newton reamer made and the rifle was returned to what I assume was its original caliber.

I have since acquired several other 1916's, including on with a carbine length barrel and one which had been restocked in the most bizarre stock I have ever seen.

I have also acquired a 1922 Newton, made on an Oberndorf Mauser action, and rebarreled in 1935 by Niedner to .270 Winchester, presumably because the original barrel was no longer useable or because factory ammunition was no longer available. It has the unique Newton set triggers and was one of only 100 imported by Newton in the early 1920's.

Mike, Thanks for that info.
The link for the address and caliber that Kutter posted is correct but your rifle will most likely have those markings further down the barrel on the left side. Can't tell you why the rough finish on the breech?
If it is not a Newton barrel, for safety you should make sure that it is cut or drilled for gas escape hole on the left side of receiver. I've seen a few Newtons with Springfield barrels that were not. ( The Springfield gas escape is of coarse, on the right side)
Also I don't know of any Newton coming from the factory with a rail or D&T for scope blocks. Although I think Newton designed the metal work for it. When you see a Newton with a scope notice that the bolt handle didn't need to be altered. Your lucky to have one that is not D&T!!!!
Anyone that wants to know just about everything on Newton rifles should get a copy of " The Newton Rifle" 2nd edition by Larry Wales.

Look at the rifling pattern and maybe slug the barrel. How many grooves? RH or LH? Conventional lands & grooves? Even or odd # of grooves? Mine marked .30 U.S.G has ratchet rifling.
