A dealer has a GR3 side by double for sale for $1195. I remember when Garcia, known for fishing tackle, was importing Beretta shotguns in the late 60s and early 70s. I am interested in the gun, but what do I need to look for? Overall, it is a nice looking gun: 30" barrels with ventilated rib, pistol grip, beavertail, single selective trigger, and solid pad.

Condition, condition, condition. Length of pull. Good gun. JR

I have one of those with 28" barrels, and it is one of my favorite doubles. In terms of quality, It is hard to beat at that price. Lighter and more nimble than a BSS, great balance, pretty nice engraving, mine has been absolutely reliable. Mine is not marked for Garcia.

I just inherited a GR3 this week. My brother bought it new in the mid '60's and hunted the gun hard for many, many years. It is a 3" 12, 30" bbls, pistol grip, beavertail, solid rib with single selective trigger. It was choked Mod and Full, he had the full choke opened up to improved modified at some time in the past. Look forward to shooting it this fall, envision it to fill a hole in my arsenal for spooky late season prairie grouse. Bill did tell me to avoid 3" loads, he had the bottom rib come loose from overly heavy loads which was decently repaired. I will take his advice, have little use for much over 1.25 ounce loads.

The 30" is fairly rare. If the gun is nice and has no problems, offer him $1,000. You cannot go wrong if it is a 95% gun and has not had the stock cut too short. JR

You get a lot of comments that Beretta sxs have no "soul". Maybe not . . . but they're pretty darned reliable.

The 12s I've handled seem a bit porky. Likely because they had 3" chambers.
My Beretta guns have been very reliable. Replaced one striker, half a lifetime ago.
Best, Ted

Something Italian that "has no soul"? Heck, Beretta even made their burgun sexy--Model 12.
(Or maybe it was the Polizia di Finanza lady cop I last saw packin' one....she was from Caltagirone and about 4' 11". NOT a person I'd cross....looked like she was just itchin' to squirt somebody with that Beretta. Sicilians have plenty of soul!).

I owned a GR2 in 20 gauge for a while. It was a well made gun for its price point and I enjoyed shooting it while I owned it. Like many guns (although not as many as Larry Brown, I hasten to add), it went down the road after I'd played with it for a while and something else took its place.
