Try any novel, or novellas by Jim Harrison. There is almost always a tie to hunting or fishing and for the most part they are set in the northwoods of Michigan.

'John MacNab' by John Buchan - read a review in Shooting Sportsmen, got it, and loved it

'Malice In The Highlands' and 'Malice Downstream' by Graham Thomas - mysterys woven with good Scottish country life.

A couple of years ago, here, I got turned on to Gerald Hammond's books and read all our library could get me.

Great post, I am glad it came up again.

If your interested in Edwardian type driven bird shoots and the people who attended them, try these two.
"The Shooting Party" by Isabel Colegate
"The Big Shots" by Jonathan Ruffer

Interesting stuff.

Found another book I'd recommend, but couldn't find it for a while in order to report on the details.

'Murder on Safari' by Elspeth Huxley, (1989). Right off the bat the detective protagonist, who has to go under cover as a PH, gets to go shopping to get himself properly outfitted before joining up with the safari where the crime occured! Interestingly, the gundealer/gunsmith's name is Capstick. Coincidence?

Anything by Jim Corbet - now available in two Omnibus editions.

amazing true tales of life in 1900-1930s India - life, people, societies; and tiger and leopard hunting after maneaters.

He trained my grandfather in jungle survival techniques before he took his ghurkas into Burma to fight the Japanese and my grandmother knew him before the war. Fascinating to read of his amazing life and he happily has a gift for telling a story.

I'll second Small Bore's recommendation of Jim Corbett:

Man-Eaters of Kumaon
Temple Tiger & Tree Tops
Leopard of Rudrapryag
My India
Jungle Lore

Corbett was an Englishman of the type celebrated by Kipling. We'll never see his like again. My wife gave me the above collection on our first Christmas together.

OK, I know this is an old thread, but I thought I would offer a recent book that is likely to appeal to many members here: The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey,
by Candice Millard (2005).

While not a hunting book (in fact, they nearly starved), I suspect that, like me, many of you probably have a soft spot for Teddy Roosevelt. Actually, I only read this book becauuse someone sent me a free copy, but it turned out to be a very interesting read about Roosevelt's post-presidency exploration of a South American river which nearly killed him. Definitely a good read.

Newlyn1, I agree, a fine read, a friend sent me a copy as well. After surviving all that it's sad how Kermit's life ended here in Anchorage.
