Anyone have information on how many Savage Fox SP guns were made in 16ga? Also, what are the going prices on these guns? Not much online to compare to and the Blue Book has nothing I can find in my issue. Any help would be appreciated.

According to Michael Mcintosh's Fox book there were 164 16 gauge SP guns manufactured, all in Utica by Savage. I had a friend who owned one of these with 30" barrels and a Kautsky single trigger. He sold it a little over a year ago for around $3500. His gun and a SPE that Jay Schacter had for sale a couple of years back are the only two of this grade I have ever seen for sale.

The SP-/SPE-Grade "Fox Special" was introduced in Savage's June 21, 1932, Fox retail and wholesale price lists. Early SP-/SPE-Grade guns had absolutely plain blued receivers. The March 1, 1934, price lists added a "Fox Special" Skeet Grade with straight grip, beavertail and skeet boring. For 1935 the SP-/SPE-Grade got a bit of engraving, and the Skeet Grade became the SP-/SPE-Grade Skeet & Upland Game Gun with quite a bit of scroll engraving.

Savage apparently had more of these flat-sided receiver forgings than they could sell as SP-/SPE-Grade guns, so made up some batches of flat-sided Fox-Sterlingworths.

I owned one of those very late flat sided Sterlingworths. The engraving, which follows the outline of the bosses on a Fox action, was there. But the bosses themselves were not.

How do the Skeet and Upland grade SPE guns with the engraving, single trigger, and beavertail grip compare in value to the more basic SP? Does anyone have information on how many of the 12ga models there were in the SPE, or SP grades? I only see the 16ga and 20ga mentioned in McIntosh's book.
